Though the world has advanced and there is lot of opportunity to explore for each and everybody, the actual fact is, though the competition for achievement has grown to a large extent there is still inequality between men and women in almost every level. People are not ready to give up their old fashioned thinking that women are not good for top jobs.

What can be the reason for this kind of mind set?

It may be because many people are less interested in changing their mindset as it has become stagnant; they are not ready to accept that both men and women are equal. The reason for such attitude is that from many years it has become a ritual that women must always be looked down when compared to men. Even women are adjusted to that mindset as even many of the women believe that they are lesser to men.

The same attitude has been carried over at the professional level also. Even though many women have struggled hard to get progressive at their rofession, they have failed to occupy the higher levels such as the CEOs, CIOs, COOs and other senior level posts.

Don't you think it is a big issue which has to be brought under the limelight? Why are women struggling to occupy the higher positions in spite of their dedication to work?

To give this question which is in the minds of millions of people must have a deeper thought on it. Anyhow, according to a research conducted by the Catalyst, a non profit research group, even though women represent 47.6 percent of today's workforce at present, in the fortune 500 in 2011 they represent only 14.1 percent of executive officers, 7.5 percent of top earners and 3.2 percent of CEOs. The Catalyst also reported that less than one-fifth of companies had 25 percent or more women in the board rectors.

According to the Conference Board, a Private Research Group, found in a recent study that even though 25 percent of women are filled in the Fortune 500 board seats which is available in annually, the percentage of female directors in that sample would only be about 23 percent by that year 2020, reports Joann S. Lublin from Wall Street Journal.

To fill this big difference between men and women the business leaders must first analyze the reason of why women are less in number when it comes to acquiring higher position at the professional level. The main reason which we all might have guessed is that of work - life balance. Many women fail to acquire higher positions for this reason. They find it very difficult to manage both the personal and professional life because of many reasons. The pressure on them will be too much and it sometimes leads negatively either on personal or professional life. So to avoid all these problems many of them sacrifice their professional life most of the time.

1: Hullo,
I have read excerpts from the report. It is based more on American context. Using these findings to understand the gender based attitudes in India would be doing injustice to Indian women who head traditional Indian companies. Thanks to our widespread educated workforce, my guess is that more Indian women will be taking the lead within the next year or so.
